In the ongoing effort to sanitise the integrated marketing communications ecosystem, the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has stated that the Council would not tolerate unwholesome advertising content on blogs, vlogs and other content platforms such as influencers, skit makers and comedians.
In a statement made available to The Industry, the apex advertising regulatory body said that “We have received complaints on the advertisements, advertising and marketing communications activities of skit makers, comedians, influencers, content creators/producers, bloggers, vloggers, etc. on digital/online media platforms.”
“Most of the advertisements exposed by this group are not only unethical with unverified claims and misinformation, but also in variation of the Nigerian code of Advertising practice,” Dr. Olalekan Fadolapo, DG ARCON stated in a signed statement.
He continued, “By this public notice, brand owners, digital agencies, secondary digital media space owners(i.e. bloggers, vloggers, influencers, comedians, skit makers, etc.) and other advertising stakeholders in the digital/online media space are advised to obtain pre-exposure approval of all advertisements, advertising and marketing communications in accordance with the Nigerian code of Advertising practice and the ARCON ActNO.23 of 2022.”
The statement dated 12th day of December 2022 further stated that ARCON will take all necessary actions including sanctions and prosecution of violators of the provisions of the Act to ensure compliance.
It would be recalled that ARCON had recently banned all unapproved political campaigns in form of print ad, television commercial, radio jiggles, digital banners and outdoor material.
