MTN Nigeria, Africa’s largest telecom company, recognised for its tradition of investment in education and development in Nigeria, has announced a first- of-its-kind opportunity for 20 media practitioners to be trained in digital skills, creativity and innovation, and improvement in writing and reporting skills through its novel Media Innovation Programme.

In partnership with the School of Media and Communication, Pan-Atlantic University, in Lagos, the six-month fully funded fellowship programme is for innovative storytellers and media leaders to equip with new skills needed to function in the rapidly changing media world in a way that guarantees career and financial success.

According to Karl Toriola, the CEO of MTN Nigeria, “The pace and source of news is changing, digitisation is enabling multi-channel consumption, commercial structures and opportunities are changing too, hence it has never been more important to support the media industry. During the programme, MIP Fellows will understand the requisites for innovation in the media landscape and discover ways to take advantage of existing legitimate means to monetize skills in a fast-changing media landscape.”

The fellowship programme – organised around the key pillars of digital media, creativity and innovation, entrepreneurship and management principles, subscription business, strategic planning skills, blockchain technology, metaverse, amongst others- will run for six weeks and spread across six months.

A combination of members of the Pan-Atlantic University faculty and industry experts will facilitate the sessions. The MIP fellows will also travel to South Africa to study the media business, Pan-Africanism and the role of development media through a programme with the University of Witwatersrand, adjudged one of Africa’s leading universities in media training.

Participants will also carry out practical group projects that will be presented at the end of the programme before graduation, where an outstanding storyteller will be awarded a grant to participate in and cover MTN Foundation’s key initiative, ‘What Can We Do Together?’

The journey to becoming one of the 20 MIP Fellows begins with applying on the School of Media and Communication portal.

The portal will be opened for registration for two weeks, from April 27 to May 5, 2022.
