With four days of intense competition done and dusted, MTN Champs closed out with a bang in Jos, Plateau, as athletes from different parts of the North came and made history in J-Town.
It was an adrenaline-packed tournament filled with talented athletes who competed for gold medals and a chance to run it out with the best athletes from previous editions in Asaba and Ibadan at the finale happening from Friday 30th April to Friday 3rd May 2024 at the UJ Esuene Stadium in Calabar.
The New Jos Stadium was also filled with an excited audience cheering for their favourite athletes and teams. The excitement, team spirit, and victory were so palpable that one could feel it all from right out the stadium entrance.
To paint the picture, the athletes gave everyone a reason to cheer and root for them as they made history during the tournament.
Leading with Miracle Oluebube Ezechukwu, the fastest 100m and 200m athlete who made records with almost every race she ran, beating her running time thrice and topping with 24.06 secs as her personal best. With these wins under her belt, Miracle will compete with other amazing runners in the MTN Champs grand finale in Calabar and the Under-20 World championship happening in August in Peru.
MTN Champs Jos was also a shining moment for Temitope Olusesan, who won three gold medals, each in the 100m, 200m and 400m titles in the Senior women’s category. While her competition was fierce, Temitope had almost everyone rooting for her in the finale and might repeat her magic at the finale in Calabar.
In the U-20 men’s 200m race, Alphonsus Akwaga was the star as he won the category within 22.19 secs followed closely by Saliub Toyeeb in 22.23 secs.
For the Senior Men’s category, Yusuf Aliyu Mohammed clinched the title of the fastest man in Jos as he ran with a personal best of 10.69secs in the 100m race. It was a re-affirming moment for the 110m hurdles runner who decided to test and train his speed in the 100m competition.
With a lineup of exceptional athletic talents, the MTN Champs grand finale happening in Calabar from Tuesday, 30th April, to Friday, 3rd May 2024, promises to be intense and more.
