President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the reconstitution of the Governing Board of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC). This is sequel to the expiration of the tenure of the former board.

Information to this effect was conveyed through a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, by the office of the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed. The statement announced Hon. Bashir Bolarinwa as the new Chairman of the NBC Board.

Following his appointment, Bolarinwa replaces the immediate past Chairman of the Board, Balarabe Ilelah whose tenure has recently expired.

According to the minister, members of the board represent various interests, and are to serve for a three-year tenure, as stipulated by the NBC Act.

Accordingly, members of the new board include Mr Wada Ibrahim, Mr Iheanyichukwu Dike, Mrs Adesola Ndu, Mr Olaniyan Badmus, Mr Bashir Ibrahim, Mr Obiora Ilo, Mr Ahmad Sajo and Mr Bayo Erikitola.

Other board members listed by the minister included a representative of the State Security Service; a representative of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture, as well as the Director-General of the Commission.

The National Broadcasting Commission is the broadcast regulator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The commission was set up on August 24, 1992, by Decree 38 of 1992 later amended as an act of the National Assembly by Act 55 of 1999 and known as National Broadcasting Commission Laws of the Federation 2004, CAP N 11 to among other responsibilities, regulate and control the broadcasting industry in Nigeria. 

The commission is saddled with the responsibility of promoting authenticated Radio and Television audience measurement and penetration; Initiating and harmonizing government policies on Trans-border direct transmission and reception in Nigeria; Regulating ethical standards and technical excellence in public, private and commercial broadcast stations in Nigeria.
