2023 was no doubt a big year for Showmax Originals in Nigeria with titles like The Real Housewives of Lagos and Crime and Justice Lagos nabbing AMVCA awards. These titles also earned a spot on the Showmax Nigeria 2023 most-watch list alongside AMVCA-nominated Wura and Flawsome, reaffirming the streaming platform’s commitment to local content.

The second season of The Real Housewives of Lagos broke first-day streaming records and maintained a weekly spot on the Twitter trend table for its 12-week duration. Wura also proved to be a hit with fans and critics alike, earning lead actress Scarlet Gomez an AMVCA Best Actress in a Drama/TV Series nomination.

Other titles that made the 2023 local most-watched list (in alphabetical order) include Covenant, Itura, Leaked, My Flatmates, The Real Housewives of Abuja and Unmarried.

In Kenya, Showmax Originals dominated the most-watched list of African content with titles including Crime and Justice Kenya, Faithless, Igiza, Kyallo Kulture, Pepeta, Second Family and The Real Housewives of Nairobi. Also in South Africa, Showmax Originals proved to be a hit all the way with Adulting, Bae Beyond Borders, Outlaws, Rosemary’s Hitlist, Spinners, The Mommy Club, The Real Housewives Of Durban, The Wife, This Body Works For Me and Unfollowed emerging as the 10 most-watched African titles in the country.

Game of Thrones continued to affirm its popularity as the Emmy-award-winning show and its sequel, House of the Dragons both earned a spot on the most-watched international titles list in Nigeria. Also on the list of most-watched international titles were the 2024 Emmy Outstanding Drama Series Succession and The Last of Us, Google’s most-searched TV show of 2023.

Black Adam, Blacklight, Last Seen Alive, Plane, Shotgun Wedding and Wrath of Man were other titles that made the 2023 international most-watched list in Nigeria.

Earlier in the week, the streaming platform unveiled the New Showmax which is set to revolutionise streaming in Africa with the world’s first standalone Premier League plan for mobile with all 380 games offered live on Showmax Premier League plan for mobile. The streamer also announced the arrival of no fewer than 20 new Showmax Originals launching in February alone, including five Nigerian Originals – epic drama series Cheta’m, a second season of the AMVCA-nominated Flawsome, docu-series Freemen, reality series Sadau Sisters and romantic comedy, The Counsellor.
